The Usikimye Welfare Group runs a transformational initiative, Queer Horizons: Empowering and Nurturing Resilient Communities, which aims to support LBQ and TGNC individuals in Kenya. The project offers a safe space at the Usikimye Queer Safe House, promoting food security through a greenhouse, and enhancing personal development with skill-building workshops. The project is designed to support these marginalized individuals, empowering them to live independently and thrive.
Founded in 2019 by activists Stella and Njeri, Usikimye focuses on combating gender-based violence and providing trauma-informed care for survivors. Their vision is to create a world free from violence and abuse, offering diverse programs to ensure women, girls, and minorities, particularly those from LGBTQIA+ communities, receive the support they need to flourish.
As Usikimye Welfare Group grows, it plans to expand the safe house, increase food security, and provide critical personal development workshops in areas such as baking, digital literacy, and mental health support. With these efforts, Usikimye aims to sustain operations, providing a haven for 50-60 individuals over six months and fostering long-term resilience within the community.
