Trans Support Community-Based Organization (TSO) is a grassroots initiative in Western Kenya dedicated to supporting Intersex, Transgender, and Gender Non-Conforming (ITGNC) individuals. Their project, “Creating a Friendly Space in Tackling Issues of Violence Towards Transgender and Intersex Persons,” focuses on reducing violence against the trans community by increasing awareness, access to justice, and improving the response of Gender-Based Violence Recovery Centres (GBVRCs).
TSO envisions a society where bodily autonomy is respected and celebrated. They provide psychosocial support, safe spaces, legal aid, and human rights training while advocating for improved healthcare and legal protections for transgender individuals. Their goal is to empower their members to report violence and seek justice without fear of discrimination.
Looking toward the future, TSO plans to train GBVRC service providers to offer non-discriminatory services, conduct human rights sensitization workshops for trans individuals, and participate in advocacy efforts, including the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The forward-facing project will help create safer environments and establish legal frameworks to document and address violence against trans people in Kenya.
