Mithra Foundation is a welfare organization engaged in improving the living conditions of people, including transgenders and men who have sex with men (MSMs) in Tiruchirappalli, India. The organization is lead by three women.
Transgenders and MSMs are not accepted within Indian society and face discrimination every day, especially in the more rural parts of India. Mithra Foundation aimed to help and empower 50 MSMs and 100 transgenders by establishing self-help groups.
Additionally, they organized a series of awareness seminars on civil and human rights for governments and authorities, like lawyers and police officers, in order to facilitate social integration of this vulnerable group.
