Planetromeo Foundation, the Amsterdam-based nonprofit that provides micro grants to LGBTQI+ grassroots groups across the globe, announces that Romeo B.V., the company behind the gay dating platform ROMEO (formerly PlanetRomeo, Gay Romeo) and the foundation’s founding sponsor, has made the decision to end its financial support of the organisation. The sponsorship, which has been in place since the nonprofit was established in 2009, represented a large part of the Foundation’s total funding.
The decision by Romeo B.V. to end its sponsorship marks a pivotal moment for the Foundation. While the loss of such a significant funding stream is a serious challenge, the Foundation’s all volunteer team remains committed to carrying the organisation forward as a fully independent entity and supporting LGBTQI+ people where it matters most.
2026 and Beyond
As a direct consequence of this funding change, PlanetRomeo Foundation does not expect to open new funding rounds in 2026. Instead, the organisation will use the remainder of the year to chart its next steps as a fully independent entity while helping bridge a broader network of business partners and individual donors to struggling local LGBTQI+ communities worldwide.
The Foundation’s team of eight dedicated volunteers will continue to operate and connect with LGBTQI+ grassroots groups throughout this transition period. All previously approved grants remain unaffected.
