Pride for Youth Initiative (PFYIN)

Pride for Youth Initiative (PFYIN) is a Ugandan organization advocating for the rights of transgender women and transgender sex workers. The Initiative was founded in 2018 by transwomen, sexworkers, and activists as a way to fight for the recognition, respect, and protection of trans women human rights in Uganda.

PFYIN seeks to address issues preventing transwomen from fully enjoying their human rights like the rest of the population. They do so by focusing their efforts on four thematic areas; health rights advocacy and health services delivery, human and legal rights advocacy, economic and climate Justice, and institutional strengthening.

PFYIN has become a leading force for trans rights in Uganda and East Africa. Their latest initiative, the Trans and Queer Women Fest Uganda, is a groundbreaking two-day festival celebrating the experiences and narratives of trans and queer women through film screenings, discussions, creative workshops, and music.

The Trans and Queer Women Festival is inspired by the belief that stories – whether in media, literature, or everyday life – shape perceptions and realities. By fostering conversations about gender, representation, and identity, the event seeks to equip Trans and Queer young women with the tools to challenge discrimination and assert their agency in all aspects of life.

PFYIN hosts the festival in June at the Grand Global Hotel in Kampala to coincide with LGBT+ Pride Month. It is particularly aimed at Trans women and Queer young women from marginalized communities who are usually excluded from such events and conversations.
