Humanity First Cameroon

Humanity First Cameroon’s mission is to promote LGBTI rights by conducting educational activities, observing human rights violations of LGBTIs and advocating the rights of sexual minorities.

In Cameroon, both male and female same-sex sexual activity is illegal. This gives rise to many forms of oppression and violence towards the Cameroonian LGBTI community.

With our funding, Humanity First Cameroon set up a shelter for young people, who have become homeless because of family rejection or have been the victim of violence due to their sexual orientation. Additionally, psychosocial support was given, in order to reduce anxiety, prevent depression and build self-esteem. Help with social reintegration was also provided.

They feel like through this project, life is giving them a second chance. They built another family with their mates who were there for the same reason.”

Project results

  • A shelter for homeless LGBTs has been set up, where they can stay for a period of three months.
  • During the runtime of the project, 13 people made use of this shelter.
  • Psychological care has been provided through individual interviews and therapy groups.
  • Psychosocial support was provided to help them reintegrate into society and to help them resume their social life.
  • Family mediation resulted in more acceptance by parents, in some cases they were even allowed to move back into their family home.
