Community Welfare and Development Fund emerged in February 2018 out of a joint effort by queer activists and an educational advocacy group.
Although the LGBTIQ+ community in Sri Lanka’s capital city Colombo is developing into a strong movement, rural areas are still left behind. Provinces such as Jaffna and Kandy lack LGBTIQ+ solidarity, activism and leadership. Therefore, Community Welfare and Development Fund will obtain our grant to develop communities and activism in these two provinces.
During the course of one year, they will organize monthly gatherings, in order to bring the local LGBTIQ+ community together in solidarity. Also, a total of 6 community coordinators, one from each district, will be trained to become community representatives who will join the effort to establish a national network of LGBTIQ+ leaders.
