2025: 9 Funded Projects

In 2025, the PlanetRomeo Foundation backed nine remarkable projects across Africa and Asia where locals are turning fear and isolation into connection, creativity, and real lasting opportunity.

With the sudden halt of funding from traditional government sources, many LGBTQ+ initiatives struggled to survive in 2025. Policy shifts had a big impact on the ongoing fight to protect and improve the lives of our rainbow family across the world.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Foundation was able to fund some of these important local projects to ensure they continue to build safety, visibility, and empowerment for LGBTQI+ people in their communities.

Africa

In Tanzania,  we funded an organisation that helps LGBTQI+ youth find strength and resilience through football, yoga, arts, and income-generating creative skills.

In Nigeria, two projects were supported. The first is creating a safe, long-term shelter for intersex women who’ve been rejected by their families, pairing trauma counseling with practical vocational training. The second project is helping trans, intersex, and gender-diverse people transform personal stories into powerful art and advocacy that will be seen in exhibitions and online.

In Kenya, funding went to an emergency shelter and peer-led healing activities are offering queer refugees and sex workers safety, stability, and space to breathe.

In Uganda, two initiatives are responding directly to hostile legal and social climates: one is creating a resource hub for LGBTQ students and young professionals to connect, train, and organize, while another is opening a dedicated shelter in northern Uganda for LGBTQ people living with albinism.

And in Somalia, support went to the expansion of shelter spaces in multiple cities that are protecting dozens of transgender people at immediate risk, while supporting their transition toward independent living and income generation.

Asia

In rural Indonesia, we supported an organisation helping young people gather in safe spaces for health education, HIV awareness, sports, and peer support—reducing stigma and building lasting local networks.

And in Uzbekistan, an amazing group is now providing weekly sports, cultural gatherings, and group therapy sessions as a way to build resilience and leadership in a region where many LGBTQ+ people often live in isolation.

2025 has shown that direct support for our brothers and sisters is more important than ever. With changes in governments and policy, many LGBTQ+ communities across the world have lost once dependable funding and vital resources.

The projects the Foundation has funded over the years show that LGBTQ+ people will continue to work to support their rainbow family, even when others walk away. We are stronger and more resilient when we support each other.

Every donation helps us continue this mission, creating safety, visibility, and empowerment where it is needed most.
