2024: 22 Funded Projects

In 2024, the PlanetRomeo Foundation continued its mission to strengthen the global Rainbow Family through direct community support. After several years of crisis-driven work during and after the pandemic, 2024 marked a welcome return to regular funding rounds and focused again on empowerment, visibility, and equality for LGBTQ+ people worldwide.

Throughout the year, the Foundation supported 22 grassroots projects in 19 countries, with a total of €60,500 in funding. These projects ranged from human rights education and creative advocacy to safe spaces and mental health initiatives. Each of them shared one goal: to help LGBTQ+ people live openly, safely, and proudly.

Thanks to our generous donors, the Foundation could once again expand its reach and help build stronger, more resilient communities around the world.

Asia

In India, support helped a queer feminist group expand mental-health care and resilience training for queer and trans youth, offering tools to navigate stress, identity challenges, and discrimination with greater support.

In Indonesia, support strengthened grassroots activism and provided vital assistance for queer refugees and detained activists in a country where LGBTQ+ safety and dignity remain urgent issues.

In Nepal, grants boosted local advocacy for lesbian and bisexual women through education, community meetings, and public storytelling that helped bring visibility to experiences often left out of mainstream conversations.

In Sri Lanka, funding supported a transgender network developing skill-building and empowerment programs for trans and gender-diverse people.

And in Thailand, funding made regional Pride activities and youth-focused inclusion workshops possible, giving young LGBTQ+ people space to celebrate, learn, and organize together.

Africa

In Kenya, funding fueled a bold, art-driven advocacy project that brought queer stories into public spaces through performance and community education.

In Uganda, support focused on providing safe shelter and psychological care for women and trans people navigating increasingly hostile anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

In Ghana, a grant helped a group challenge LGBTQ+ discrimination through human rights education and digital campaigns that kept queer voices visible online.

In Cameroon, support helped a grassroots team offer essential health services and legal guidance for those facing state persecution.

In Nigeria, funding aided an empowerment program for lesbian, bisexual, and queer women that established mentorship networks and safe community spaces.

In Malawi, youth-led advocacy gained momentum through funded leadership training that equipped young LGBTQ+ people to be voices for change in conservative areas.

And in Zimbabwe, an established local group was able to continue its long-term community-building efforts of workshops and media outreach that uplift lesbian and bisexual women.

Europe

In Armenia, funding boosted trans rights work through workshops, visibility efforts, and legal advocacy, giving community members the tools and confidence to speak up and shape their future.

In Georgia, funding boosted regional LGBTQ+ centers by supporting training sessions, peer-counseling programs, and public awareness events with the intent of becoming essential spaces for connection and growing local activism.

In Greece, safe accommodation and emergency support for LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers helped ensure that people fleeing discrimination had a place to land with dignity and support.

In Poland, support helped an advocacy group advance marriage equality and broader LGBTQ+ acceptance through creative campaigns and public outreach.

And in Ukraine, ongoing war made daily life unpredictable and dangerous for many queer individuals. Funding for a local group provided psychological support and emergency aid to helping LGBTQ+ people affected by the war.

Latin & South America

In Brazil, an LGBTI collective was supported in its efforts to boost rural LGBTQ+ communities through cooperative farming, educational activities, and leadership development.

In Colombia, grants allowed a local advocacy group to develop campaigns that were aimed at increasing queer representation and protecting threatened activists.

In Mexico, funding supported a vital shelter and psychological care for LGBTQ+ refugees and other displaced individuals who had needed somewhere to be safe.

And in Peru, support a group promoting LGBTQ+ rights in schools and universities through awareness training and inclusion workshops.

Middle East & North Africa

In Tunisia, funding made it possible for an LGBTQ+ group to host cultural events, film screenings, and safe community gatherings.

In Lebanon, support focused on aiding a local group’s ability to continue offering vital health, shelter, and legal support for LGBTQ+ people amid ongoing political instability.

2024 reminded us how vital local initiatives are in creating lasting change. From advocacy and art to education and shelter, these 22 projects demonstrated the power of visibility and resilience.

Together, they showed that even in unsure times, progress is possible and that love, courage, and equality will always find a way.

The PlanetRomeo Foundation continues to support grassroots LGBTQ+ initiatives around the world. Every donation helps create safety, visibility, and empowerment where it’s needed most.
